Liveable and diverse – Vienna is different
We want to hear from our students about what they like most about the place where they are studying. Milica tells us here about everything Vienna offers during the winter semester.
“Vienna is different”: That’s the city of Vienna’s slogan – and many people will agree with it after visiting Vienna. Although I wasn’t born here, I’m in love with this charming city and am constantly falling deeper in love with it. It’s not for nothing that Vienna was voted the most liveable city in the world for the ninth time.
My favourite place in Vienna …
… to study: Main library in the 7th district Vienna
There are a lot of opportunities for further education in Vienna. And of course there are also a few spots with a very pleasant atmosphere for studying. An example is the main library in the 7th district where you can enjoy a beautiful view while studying without disturbances. Most of the people here are students who appreciate the tranquillity and the huge variety of literature.
The cosy cafés throughout Vienna are also relaxing places to study. I personally often visit visit one called “das Möbel”. In addition to its cool atmosphere, large tables and fast Wi-Fi, the café also scores points with its hot chocolate.
…to shop: Kärntner Straße, Mariahilfer Straße or Donauzentrum
From Zara to Massimo Dutti to Gucci – you can find everything in the 1st district. You can really let off some steam while shopping in the famous Kärntner Straße.
For those who don’t want to get in the way of tourists taking pictures of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, there are alternatives in Mariahilfer Straße or in the Donauzentrum. There is also a huge selection of shops for student budgets.
I only recommend visiting shopping centres or streets on the weekdays. It seems as if all of Vienna has shopping fever on Saturdays.
…to go out: Bermuda Triangle
Whether you like rock, pop, techno or top-ten hits, Vienna has music for every taste. The numerous bars at Schwedenplatz, i.e. the so-called Bermuda Triangle, offer a great start for the evening. Other discotheques and clubs, such as the Club Passage, Volksgarten Disco, Säulenhalle or Platzhirsch, make the nightlife in Vienna a special experience.
… to have delicious food: Wirtshaus Salon Plafond or Restaurant Heunisch & Erben
The range of culinary experiences in Vienna is hard to beat. Whether it’s traditional Viennese cuisine, Mediterranean specialities or Asian delicacies, Vienna offers a huge selection.
Salonplafond is one of my favourite restaurants. You can get excellent Wiener schnitzel and other delicacies there. Heunisch & Erben is a true dream for wine lovers. In addition to the huge selection of wines from around the world, the restaurant also offers a small but excellent menu.
… to get into the Christmas spirit: Wiener Weihnachtstraum
The Christmas markets are impressive events that take place every year during the Advent season in Vienna. One of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets, the Wiener Weihnachtstraum, is set up every year at the Rathausplatz in Vienna, Apart from the numerous stalls, there is also a large skating rink in front of the town hall. It’s definitely a good place to enjoy the Christmas season in Vienna.
My favourite location: Albertina
It’s not so easy to say which location in Vienna is my favourite.
The city centre has so much to offer and is alive like no other part of Vienna – that’s why it’s one of the places I like to spend time. The Albertina, an art museum that offers a breathtaking view of the Vienna State Opera, is a really special place for me. It’s definitely a place where you can fully enjoy the beauty and elegance of Vienna.
